Airsoft BB Pistols
This depends on whether you’re using a gas or electric airsoft pistol. With a gas airsoft pistol, gas is released from the magazine when you pull the trigger, launching the BB from the barrel. Simultaneously, a small cylinder fills with gas and pushes against the piston causing the slide to retract. This resets the mechanism and loads the BB into the chamber for firing. With an electric airsoft pistol, the firing mechanism is triggered by an electric motor instead.
Originally created by Tokyo Marui, hop-ups enable BB backspin, which allows rounds to fly on an even trajectory until the end of their flight. A correctly adjusted hop-up will therefore improve the range and accuracy of your airsoft pistol.
Airsoft hop-up devices include a projection in the barrel (bucking) which partially hinders the BBs, causing backspin. The primary cause of the projectile’s lift is known as the Magnus Effect, which is observable when spinning objects move through the air or fluid.
In airsoft terms, the BB is deflected by the bucking, causing a difference is pressure that causes the BB to curve away from its original arc (i.e., backspin). Hop-ups are usually adjustable, allowing the player to tune it according to their preference.
To create further backspin, increase your hop-up by moving the wheel clockwise. To place less backspin on your BBs, turn the hop-up wheel anticlockwise.
